14 Memories of Japan

Writer's picture: SharonSharon

1) At lunch time there are people who work in restaurants who invite you to come in and eat. I remember there was this lady who handed me the restaurant flyer and I decided to go with her. She accompanied me through several streets, at a certain point I remember that I was perplexed because I didn't understand how far away the place was or how I was going to get back, but then thank God we arrived.😂💖 There I discovered that in Japan they often offer you green tea in restaurants (hot if it's cold ouside and with ice in summer) a real pleasure🥰💖💖💖 It was all delicious but I didn't know how to express it since not many people know English in Japan, I dared to say "oishii" hoping not to be disrespectful and the owner smiled happily, it was a nice moment and also pleasantly refreshing🤭💖🥰💖💖

2) Many people gave away fans and packets of paper handkerchiefs with an advertisement, I must say that it is excellent as in summer it is very humid and it's pleasant to be able to ventilate yourself or dry your face (even if it took me a while to open the packet of handkerchiefs since it was cute).

3) I remember entering a shop and the young salesclerk, at the end of my purchase, gave me a deep bow, cute🤭🌻 I imagined, since this didn't happen in the other shops where I bought, that it was a way of saying that he had appreciated my visit.

4) Manga stores have an incredible amount of floors in Japan! I entered a shop with at least 5 or 7 floors of comics, DVDs and so on! As well as a floor dedicated to drawing materials where I discovered that they have catalogs for poses, places and many things that I wouldn't have imagined! Really fantastic, if you love drawing definitely check it out!💖💖💖

I took this to draw:

5) I was lucky enough to attend a Maiko show in Kyoto, apprentice geishas, it was beautiful! They are very feminine and elegant.💖 Then while I was walking, since it is the neighborhood where geisha live, I saw one on the street! She was incredibly beautiful! Out of respect I didn't photograph her (I had read that it shouldn't be done) and then I remember the annoyed expression she had when someone did took it.

6) I ate and fell in love with Ichigo Daifuku😍 and I also tried other variations, one was purple and seemed to have blueberries in it, I admit I wasn't 100% sure what it was but it was delicious!💖

7) I found several sandwiches with sweet fillings in the shops and, although I prefer to eat the food of the place I am in, I admit that I even went to an Italian restaurant and... They surprised me! I ate and discovered an Italian dish that I didn't know about: pasta with potatoes and broccoli, it was delicious!

8) I really appreciated the Shabu Shabu, the meat (😍) that I had ordered from a screen (like the one at McDonald's) in a restaurant and a pack of sushi purchased at a konbini (convenience store) with octopus and fish I had never seen, which I I found it very good and it stuck with me.

9) The thing that struck me most is the freedom in clothing. I saw different styles and in particular I remember a lady who I found more flashy/particular than the others, with an eccentric style, a fluorescent wig and with a dog in the stroller. I remember that she went unnoticed, no one observed her (except me). I found it incredible. In Ticino, if you dress eccentrically, they even shout at you from the car, asking if you're going to the Carnival or something similar.

At least, I've heard it several times in the past. But there are also those brave people who give you a compliment or who know what inspires you. Nice, thanks God. 💪💖💖💖

However, I find it amazing that in Japan, on the streets, you can dress as you wish and go unnoticed.💖💖💖

10) I loved shops of all kinds. You can find many styles of clothing and unique items💖 there are decoration and accessory shops where I saw a black chain necklace with a pendant made with a print of a candlestick drawing. Fantastic! It stuck in my mind because I think about it often💖 Shops entirely of stickers, an incredible amount of beauty accessories,

fake eyelashes, make-up, shampoo, hair chalk,... everything!💖💖💖💖

11) I remember that the grass, the foliage, because of the sunlight was very bright in Japan. In fact, back in Switzerland, our greenery seemed dull in comparison. For many years, until I came to terms with it. Incredible.

Curiosity: in middle school my visual teacher told us that she had bought a yellow t-shirt in Jamaica, she said that there, because of the sunlight, it was bright, but when she arrived in Switzerland, the yellow seemed faded. She explained to us that we must always look at colors under a white, neutral light, to understand what their true color is.

12) I remember that I was surprised several times to understand that language is not a barrier, because with body language and paraverbal you understand a lot.

This really helped me to be more confident and I was able to experience it in other places too.😃🙂💖💖💖

13) There are several temples that you can visit both for a fee and for free. They're very interesting. I found the Heian Shrine Garden spectacular💖💖💖 there was also a stone path in the pond, I love it!😍💖💖🥰💖💖💖💖 while the Kiyomizu Temple has a very interesting panoramic view and I had the honor of playing the temple drum🤭💖

(it was possible to do it, I wasn't the only one, don't get me wrong!😂💖)

There was a moment where a local, hearing our guide speaking in Italian, said "Ciao!"😃🥰💖(we had half a day of tour guide, I was still a minor at the time).💖

14) While I was walking aimlessly near the hotel I remember buying a gift (a cup and saucer) in the garage of a kind and calm gentleman :)

I conclude by saying that Kyoto is much more traditional than modern Tokyo and for this reason I liked it more🥰💖💖💖

If you want to go to Japan and haven't done so yet, I recommend it!💖 It's definitely a unique, interesting and enriching experience! If you've already been there or want to share other experiences, write in the comments below! I would love to read your adventures!😃💖💪🥰💖💖💖
